SA:Rann says mine bill will be ready

South Australian Premier MIKE RANN says he wants to have legislation before state parliament
next month, giving the go-ahead for the 30 billion dollar expansion of the Olympic Dam
mine.

He insists final negotiations with mining giant BHP Billiton haven't been rushed by
his decision to step down as premier on October 20.

Mr RANN's told Sky News the deal was already 95 per cent done when he was rolled by
his own party, and they're sticking to an agreed timetable.

The outgoing premier says he wants to leave his successor JAY WEATHERILL with a clean slate.

Fed: Wealthy people must pay their fair share of tax: Swan

Fed: Wealthy people must pay their fair share of tax: Swan

CANBERRA, April 1 AAP - Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan has welcomed a crackdown on wealthy
individuals by the Australian Tax Office (ATO).

The ATO has launched a new program aimed at some 1,200 people with assets worth $30
million and over, saying irrespective of the business and tax advice they receive, they
are responsible for their own tax affairs.

The ATO's high wealth individuals (HWI) taskforce will undertake 200 risk reviews and
start 40 audits during this financial year - up from 22 audits last year which raised
an additional $280 million in revenue.

"Australian families who work hard and do their bit are entitled to expect that wealthy
people actually pay their fair share," Mr Swan told Fairfax radio.

"The tax commissioner ... is making it very clear he's going to make sure they do pay
their fair share and that it will be no excuse to say that somebody else told them not
to do it."

Since the taskforce was established in 1996, additional revenue of $1.7 billion has
been collected and losses of $1.7 billion disallowed, Tax Commissioner Michael D'Ascenzo
says.

At February 29, 2008, the taskforce had raised assessments totalling $171.3 million
and collected $115.9 million from audit activities for this financial year.

The ATO has increased the number of people in the HWI taskforce to 181 and enhanced
its data matching to substantially improve profiling and risk assessment of wealthy individuals.

Mr Swan said the tax commissioner was taking a targeted approach.

"That's a good thing for all taxpayers," he said.

"We are giving tax cuts after the 1st July which are predominantly aimed at low and
middle-income earners, and of course our capacity to do that into the future depends upon
our capacity to ensure all Australian taxpayers are paying their fair share, including
this 1,200 wealthy grouping."

SA: Minister urges gas sector to get moving

AAP General News (Australia)

SA: Minister urges gas sector to get moving

ADELAIDE, April 16 AAP - Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane has urged the gas
sector to get moving on major projects or face the prospect of their international customers
going elsewhere.

Mr Macfarlane said the federal government would consider the industry's call for further
tax breaks to help turn gas projects into reality.

But the minister said the sector already had plenty of incentive to invest in new ventures,
considering the high world prices for oil and gas.

"My point to them is there is a major competitor to oil and gas in the production of
electricity and that is nuclear power," Mr Macfarlane said after his address to the Australian
Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) conference.

"Our customers overseas who receive gas from us currently and who are considering receiving
gas are also nuclear powered countries.

"If the gas industry doesn't get down and go hard they may find our customers leapfrog
gas and go straight to the one true baseload zero-emission technology and that is nuclear."

Mr Macfarlane said while Australia would be happy to sell those countries more uranium
for their nuclear power stations, the local gas industry also needed to ensure it developed
its projects quickly to optimise the high gas prices around the Pacific rim.

The minister's comments followed the release of a strategic plan from the oil and gas
industry which included calls for tax breaks and other initiatives to help the sector
overcome challenges including declining local oil production and the escalating global
energy demand.

APPEA chairman Colin Beckett said the introduction of a five-year capital depreciation
regime was the single policy measure capable of shifting large gas projects from the drawing
board to construction.

dousing him with petrol and setting him alight in Sydney's east.

The boy has faced Bidura Children's Court over yesterday afternoon's attack in Daceyville

The nine-year-old victim remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital .. after
receiving burns to 20 per cent of his body.

The court has heard the boy has displayed violent behaviour since witnessing the suicide

And it's been told the Department of Housing has ignored his father's requests for

The boy's been granted strict conditional bail .. but it may be weeks before he's freed

Qld: Coalition candidate heads for victory in Gaven by-election

GOLD COAST, April 1 AAP - Queensland Labor is heading for its third consecutive by-election
defeat, with the coalition's Dr Alex Douglas expected to win the seat of Gaven tonight.

With 72.05 per cent of the vote counted, Dr Douglas holds 9,249 votes - or 41.45 per
cent - while Labor's Phil Gray holds 8,344 votes (37.39 per cent).

With some 3,500 postal and pre-poll votes to be counted, the notional summary is expected
to deliver Dr Douglas 57.32 per cent of the vote, compared to Mr Gray's 47.68 per cent.

The by-election was forced by the resignation of former Labor MP Robert Poole.

Mr Poole - dubbed the Member for Thailand for his frequent visits to the Asian country

Fed: Child welfare change just a diversion, Swan says

AAP General News (Australia)
12-04-2005
Fed: Child welfare change just a diversion, Swan says

CANBERRA, Dec 4 AAP - Treasurer Peter Costello is using a child welfare proposal to
distract attention from the Robert Gerard controversy, opposition treasury spokesman Wayne
Swan says.

Mr Swan said today it was passing strange that Mr Costello announced a proposal to
divert child welfare payments from irresponsible parents so soon after Mr Gerard, a prominent
South Australian manufacturer and Liberal Party donor, resigned from the Reserve Bank
board over tax irregularities.

"I don't think that there is any doubt that it's a diversion from his problems over
Mr Gerard," Mr Swan told the Ten Network.

He also said Labor would continue their attack against Mr Costello in parliament this week.

"This treasurer does not know right from wrong," he said.

"He knowingly appointed Mr Gerard and he knew that Mr Gerard was involved in tax havens,
that there were serious allegations of tax avoidance.

"He did that in the full knowledge of those events and this week in the parliament
continued to defend the appointment."

Mr Swan refused to be drawn on what changes a Labor government would make to ensure
party donors and cronies did not get places on the central bank's board.

He argued that appointees must be independent despite previous Labor government appointees
including former prime minister Bob Hawke and ACTU secretary Bill Kelty.

"We're looking at all these issues, I can assure you we will change the system and
I can assure you that you will hear a lot more from Labor about that," he said.

Mr Swan said federal Labor would also oppose any move to appoint Victorian businessman
Ron Walker to the board.

"He has been federal treasurer of the Liberal Party," he said.

"He has raised millions and millions of dollars for the Liberal Party.

"It seems to be the new qualification for appointment to the Reserve Bank board is
that you must be a Liberal party donor. We think that is entirely inappropriate and it
doesn't uphold the high standards that are required."

Fed: Liberal Senator vows to fight on against Xstrata takeover

Liberal Senator ROSS LIGHTFOOT has vowed to continue the fight against a Swiss company's

Treasurer PETER COSTELLO has said the federal government has no problem with Xstrata's
hostile $8.4 billion takeover bid of WMC Resources.

Senator LIGHTFOOT says the Swiss minerals giant Xstrata is a predator, and he hopes
other companies will now put in rival bids.

Political and business groups have lobbied against the bid on the grounds it would
give Xstrata control over WMC's vast uranium deposits at its Olympic Dam mine in South
Australia.

West Australian Premier GEOFF GALLOP says he also opposes the takeover.

He says the Swiss group has shown it's not a good corporate citizen after abandoning

Verizon, Microsoft Sign Deal to Provide Internet Services to Mobile Customers.

By Brendan January, The Record, Hackensack, N.J. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

May 24--Verizon Wireless Inc. and Microsoft Corp. announced Thursday a partnership to sell Microsoft Internet services to Verizon mobile phone users.

Customers of Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile phone company in the nation, and Vodafone Group Plc will be able to use Microsoft products such as real-time communications service and news alerts over their mobile connections, the companies said in a statement.

Wireless companies have expanded their networks to carry larger files, including text and images, at average speeds two to three times those of a 56K connection -- which is typical for home PCs.

This week, Verizon announced it would offer high-speed wireless networking for a flat fee and expand the network to 29 additional markets, forming what the company called "the country's first and only national high-speed wireless data network."

With these expanded capabilities, it makes sense for wireless companies to seek out established partners to provide content, industry analysts said.

The telecommunications industry has been struggling through a collapse in stock prices, a sluggish economy, and severe competition. Verizon Wireless and other wireless companies have sought to develop high-speed wireless services to boost profits.

Verizon Wireless will charge about $100 a month for the wireless, high-speed Internet service.

Sprint PCS, another wireless company, has said it, too, will offer a high-speed Internet service for about the same price.

"Companies have to make a decision as to whether they want to be a player or just a part of the wireless data explosion," said Jeff Kagan, an independent telecommunications analyst. "Both Verizon and Microsoft have thrown their hat in the ring, and they're going to be players."

The companies are seeking to match complimentary areas of expertise, said Kagan.

"Neither has all expertise under one roof -- Verizon is [the] top voice and data [provider] but not a content provider. With Microsoft, it's the reverse. It makes sense for companies like this to team up."

Wireless companies may be close to finally delivering the promise of wireless communication -- high-speed Internet access from remote phones or laptops virtually anywhere at anytime.

Earlier efforts fizzled because of poor design and service.

LG Telecom and Genie Form Strategic Alliance for Mobile Internet Services.

Collaboration Will Create Exciting New Mobile Services for Korean Consumers

SEOUL, South Korea and LONDON, March 12 /PRNewswire/ --

LG TeleCom (LGT) and Genie -- BT's Mobile Internet Division, today announced that they intend to join forces to offer Korean consumers an extended range of new-age Mobile Internet communications services.

The result of this strategic alliance will enhance LGT's state-of-the-art "ez-i" Mobile Internet offering, which currently serves 2 million customers. Launched in May 1999, ez-i is one of the largest fixed-and-mobile portal sites in Asia and consists of seven major applications with more than 1,000 items of content from over 150 providers.

At the heart of the alliance is the unified messaging service (UMS) provided through Genie as an application service provider. This one-mailbox set-up allows users to "pool" a number of e-mail accounts from different providers and send and receive e-mail, voice and text messages to and from fixed and mobile phones, other handheld devices, PCs and fax machines.

Today's announcement signals a collaboration of expertise and innovation from LGT and Genie that will produce Mobile Internet services to enrich the lives of LGT's customers. Genie will also support LGT's existing WAP services.

Following an agreement made in Seoul on Friday, Genie Managing Director Kent Thexton said: "We are delighted to be working with LG TeleCom who have impressed us with their advanced range of Mobile Internet services. We are very pleased that LGT has joined the growing Genie community around the world. We are looking forward to leveraging our joint expertise, technologies and content. And, of course, we are happy that Genie will have a presence in Korea, which is at the forefront of the world's wireless revolution."

LG TeleCom VP, Mr. Seyong Ro emphasised that Mobile Internet will take off as a result of the evolution of services in Korea.

He said: "This agreement with Genie is another important cornerstone in our 'ez-i' service, which will allow our customers to access 'the power of Genie' through the UMS solution. This strategic alliance with Genie will give LGT customers access to a wide range of content in Korean and English and will add to LGT's already-impressive range of Mobile Internet applications."

Genie aims to be one of the world's leading integrated mobile portals -- providing lifestyle-enhancing services for mobile and Internet users who need to perform everyday tasks while on the move.

Building on its success in the UK and Europe, Genie already has partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region with leading mobile networks in Hong Kong and Malaysia, plus a developing presence in Japan. Genie is developing an application service provider (ASP) business in the UK, working with technology partner Seven, which is providing WAP enterprise application infrastructure to BT Cellnet to enhance its business offerings. This ASP model has been extended in the Asia Pacific region where it has been applied to Genie consumer offerings and is visible through "powered by Genie" branding on our partner sites.

Recent research by UBS Warburg indicates that the wireless revolution has been driven out of four key global cities -- Helsinki, Stockholm, Tokyo and Seoul. Recent economic change in Korea has resulted in many new technology and content companies -- turning the nation into a "breeding ground" for innovative wireless applications.

About LG TeleCom

Wireless Internet services were commercialised for the first time in Korea by LG TeleCom in May 1999. The company has since held a leading position in the mobile market by offering the widest variety of content. LGT was the first operator in the world to launch "ez-Java" which is based on Java technology. This is a software that was previously only available in PC web browsers but now enables LGT's customers to enjoy a wide range of applications, such as network games, news, stock information, sports results and entertainment on their mobile phones.

About Genie

Genie, BT's mobile Internet portal and currently a wholly-owned subsidiary, will later this year be owned 75 percent by BT wireless and 25 percent by BT group. BT owns 24.12 % of LGT.

Genie has web and wireless portals in Japan, Hong Kong, the UK, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, plus a wireless portal in Malaysia, with more than 2.8 million registrations in total.

Over the coming months, Genie is pursuing an international rollout programme in countries throughout Europe and Asia Pacific for both its web and WAP portals.

Content on the portals includes cutting-edge entertainment from E4, MTV and the Ministry of Sound, breaking sports results from eXcite Sport, the latest news from Guardian Unlimited, business stories from 451.com, last minute travel deals from lastminute.com and up-to-the-minute stock quotes from T D Waterhouse.

America Online Licenses Autoweb Content and Technology, Allowing AOL Users to

Research and Configure a Car Completely Online

Autoweb Buying Services to Have Constant Presence on AOL Brands

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and DULLES, Va., May 17 /PRNewswire/ --

Autoweb.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: AWEB), the leading consumer automotive Internet service, and America Online, Inc. (NYSE: AOL), the world's leading interactive services company, today announced a four-year infrastructure, technology and marketing alliance under which Autoweb will license its automotive content, data and technology to America Online, enhancing the ability of users to research and buy cars through several AOL brands.

Under the agreement, Autoweb's content and new configuration and comparison services, from its AIC division, will be integrated into automotive areas across AOL, AOL.com, CompuServe, Netscape Netcenter and AOL Digital City under "Powered by Autoweb" branding. Visitors to these AOL brands will be able to configure a car by manufacturer, make, model, trim specifications and other option packages, and perform simple or comprehensive side-by-side comparisons of competitive vehicles.

As part of this premier relationship, Autoweb will also have a constant presence on the AOL brands. This will enable the more than 24 million AOL and CompuServe members and the tens of millions of additional visitors to AOL's Web-based brands to access a new co-branded site allowing AOL members to seamlessly access Autoweb's popular buying services.

The agreement is a key step in the development of the new AOL Auto Channel, announced previously by America Online, which will offer members a wealth of reliable, accurate information, services, and tools for car shopping, buying and maintenance throughout the ownership cycle. As part of the Auto Channel experience, AOL members will be able to instantly access the co-branded Autoweb site.

By enriching America Online's automotive content with valuable Autoweb information and functionality, the agreement furthers AOL's ability to provide a platform for all auto manufacturers and their dealers to efficiently guide informed car buyers through their sales channels; strengthen ongoing communications with current owners; and deliver targeted, brand-specific messaging to the users of all AOL's interactive properties.

"This alliance with America Online demonstrates that Autoweb is not only a leading consumer brand offering the most popular online car-buying choices, but also the owner of core assets that are making Autoweb the industry standard in automotive data, content and technology," said Dean DeBiase, chairman and CEO of Autoweb. "By leveraging the value of our premier automotive content and tools we can seamlessly offer millions of America Online users the best methods to research and compare cars online, combined with our most popular car buying services."

"Purchasing a car involves a great deal of research, and can be confusing and time-intensive," said Bob Pittman, President and Chief Operating Officer of America Online Inc. "By deploying Autoweb's content and technology, we will be able to simplify the process, offering the online consumers a consistent, seamlessly integrated and personalized car buying experience."
