Fed: 52 asylum seekers stopped off WA

CANBERRA, Aug 29 AAP - A boat believed to be carrying 52 suspected asylum seekers has
been intercepted off Australia's northwest coast.

Navy patrol boat HMAS Ararat stopped the vessel as it neared the Ashmore Islands, 320km
off Western Australia, on Saturday.

It was carrying 52 passengers and three crew members.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said the group would be taken to Christmas Island
for processing.

"The group will be transferred to Christmas Island where they will undergo security,
identity and health checks as well as establish their reasons for travel," he said.
